camel manure which at all times permeated the inna in which I stayed in North China and Chinese Turkeystan, (which manure formed the sole fuel to heat the kange or brick and mud-built

malaria and bowel trouble attacked him was in a private

house rented by the Rev. G.W. Hunter, with whom he stayed a

This house was in nothing different from an ordinary

Chinese inn except that it was quiet, and instead of using

horse of capel manure for fuel, coal was used. Ammonia smells

were carefully guarded against in order to save the reserve

clothing which was not worn on the road, from its stench, A

sturdy Japanese traveller, trying to get away from the stench

of Ammonia, in very much the same circumstances as Mr. Hunter and the writer, was severly attacked by malaria, and he could not get rid of it until he was out on the road again, If we

had realised at that time how wholesome the stench of manure

was for our... system, we should have used it instead of coal.

But we rather dreaded its penetrating stench, that sticks to ones-ciệthes and beings, the smell of a horse-stable into every place in which ́óne appears with such garments as we used on the road. Even our reserve clothing could not be saved from

it The delicate nose of the Russian Consul's wife was rather offended by the stench of Ammonia which we brought into her elegant parlour, and her pretty daughters pinched their tiny hoses, smelling our clothes, I am sure though that the Russian Consul's family would have experienced a great uplift in their rather poor condition of health, Leing troubled with fever and other ills very frequently, if they had allowed the
